Our Memorable Gaelic Cats for International Cat Day
Today is International Cat Day – Là Eadar-Nàiseanta nan Cat! 🐈🐈⬛ So we’d like to celebrate by featuring two of our recent books and the real-life cats who inspired their main characters!
Pangur Dubh: An Cat Coigreach
An Cat Coigreach [The Foreign Feline] by June Ghreumach is a middle-grade novel about Pangur Dubh and his adventures running away from home and finding family. The real-life Pangur was June’s beloved family cat who was born in Bern, Switzerland and lived out a long and happy life in Scotland. However, at one point Pangur disappeared for a whole year in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis…then mysteriously reappeared at the Hebridean Celtic Festival! June wrote and illustrated her middle-grade Gaelic novel as an imaginary tale of Pangur’s adventures while he was missing.

Teadaidh: Bidh Teadaidh ann Deiseil
Bidh Teadaidh ann Deiseil [Teddy Is Ready] by Joanne MacDonald / Eòsag Dhòmhnallach is a picture book with rhyming verse about Teddy / Teadaidh, a fluffy grey cat who tries to help with all the chores on his farm in Cape Breton. Joanne works on Teddy’s farm in real life, and her illustrations and rhyming verse, translated into Gaelic by her sister Joyce, depict Teadaidh’s lovable, goofy nature and his talent for putting himself right in the middle of each day’s work!
