Happy Valentine’s Day from Bradan Press
Even though we are snowed in here in Nova Scotia today for Valentine’s Day, we can still celebrate inside with some Gaelic words! If you want to talk about someone you love, below are some options to try in Scottish and Irish Gaelic:
English: My love
Scottish Gaelic: Mo ghaol
Irish Gaelic: Mo ghrá
If you want to talk directly to someone you love, you can use what’s called the vocative case:
English: Love
Scottish Gaelic: A ghaoil
Irish Gaelic: A ghrá
Words from Anne of Green Gables in Gaelic
We also want to share with you some words about a different kind of love! Here is the original “kindred spirits” quote from Anna Ruadh, the Scottish Gaelic translation of Anne of Green Gables written by L.M. Montgomery and translated by Mòrag Anna NicNèill:
“…Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It’s splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.” —Chapter 19, final line
“…Chan eil spioradan dàimheil cho gann ’s a bha mi an dùil. Tha e sgoinneil nuair a chì thu gu bheil uimhir ann dhiubh san t-saoghal.”
