Atlantic Books Today Interview
This week, an interview with Bradan Press author-artist Angus MacLeod appeared in the Fall 2023 issue of Atlantic Books Today. Angus spoke to Dave Howlett, manager of the Halifax branch of Strange Adventures Comix & Curiosities, about his influences in the worlds of classic comics and horror. Find Angus’s interview about his second English-language graphic novel, Doors, on pp. 29-30 of the paper edition, available free at many bookstores and libraries in Atlantic Canada, or read it for free online.
Success at the Royal National Mòd in Paisley, Scotland
Earlier this month, Bradan Press author Caroline Bennett won third prize for New Gaelic Song at the 2023 Royal National Mòd in Paisley, Scotland. Caroline created the song “Caitlin” about a special young girl with Down Syndrome. Meal do naidheachd, Caroline. What a special way for Caitlin’s memory to be honoured. The song can be heard on Caroline’s YouTube channel.
Caroline now lives in the USA, but she studies Gaelic in Cape Breton and online with Angus MacLeod of Explore Gaelic—yes, the same Angus MacLeod mentioned above! Although the poem/song “Caitlin” is not in Òr a Mhaireas / Lasting Gold: New Nova Scotia Gaelic poetry, we are proud to say that Caroline contributed four other poems to this Bradan Press collection. These are also featured in their song forms on her YouTube channel.
We also congratulate Gillebrìde MacMillan, who has done freelance work for Bradan Press over the years, for winning first prize in the New Gaelic Song competition!
Found in the “Sgeul / Story” Exhibit at the National Library of Scotland
The Bradan Press book Biorachan Beag agus Biorachan Mòr, a traditional Gaelic tale illustrated by Cape Breton artist Eamag Dhòmhnallach / Emily MacDonald, was recently spotted in Scotland by a friend of the press. It’s with a selection of books in a storytelling area of the bilingual exhibit “Sgeul / Story: Folktales from the Scottish Highlands” at the National Library of Scotland! Below is a photo, and we’ve made Facebook reel posts with a very short video of the book in the exhibit, in both English and Gaelic.
Find out more about this Gaelic exhibit on the National Library of Scotland website. It’s on until April 20, 2024 and Bradan Press is hoping to visit in person in January!
Our version of the book also features a free online audiobook edition—listen to the story for the full Gaelic storytelling experience!
